Squares At The Hipster Show

Whew, us wild kids on the town last night. Pulled into Johnny Brenda's round 8:45, after a relaxing walk around the blocks, grabbed a couple Lion's Head IPAs, watched a little hockey, then heading upstairs to hipster central, where all the jeans shrunk and hair is sculpted. We already stuck out, what with Laura's cardigan and my mullet. But we were there to swoon, not to moon.

Ports Of Call took the stage, fashionably late and immediately filled the room with sound. They were bookended tho, with a decent opening track and quality closer, but the middle I could've taken or leaven.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra was the real standout surprise. Looking very Brian Jonestown-y they shredded thru 7 or 8 tunes of wild and wavy pop gems, each with their own distinctive jam sessions and the most creative choruses of the evening.

Headliners, Smith Westerns took the stage to Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At", a class move that set the stage. Then they played your mother's prom. And they killed it.

Quality date night. We laughed and danced and filled our ears. We almost pulled it off til between the second and third acts I handed Laura a beer and said "Oh my God, yesterday on Sprout, Chica did the funniest thing...". Exposed! We'll try again tonight.
