I Only Knew Him As Arthur

song of the day

awesome

Just Once Around The Stable

She's added a new number to her nightly bedtime repertoire; horse-riding. She's got a whole thing. Scenes, characters, and something resembling a stroyline. Let's see where this one goes. I think she's just buying more time....

When You Let Yuula Coordinate Your Birthday Party...

There's the other birthday boy. 63 this one is. 63 and still kicking. Wouldn't even sit down when there's electrical to be connected. But we kept him up late, almost midnight. And filled him full of pasta salad and muffins.

Yuula took a go at decorating, un-decorating, and re-decorating the cake. Don't mind the icing on her lips. She's not sneaking any bites.

Then, as a gift she performed a 27 minute 7 part dance, full improv and costumed. The costume was pantless pajamas. The performance was well-received.

Then we just cut this puppy in six, and everybody got one. The Yuula had a sugar high, which became a sugar low pretty quickly.

Happy Birthday Father.

Empires Of Style And Carbonated Sugar Water

song of the day

2013 Minus 1978 Equals 35

My birthday kind of stretched out over two days. It wasn't planned that way, but that's how it fell out. Plans included but were not limited to the city, planting trees, a concert, a curry house, cake, and maybe a little downtime. I had planned to finally build our compost bins, but I was forbidden from any work of any kind. Good for me.

Here's what happened...

April 24th, dropped Yuula off with the Trunks at Dansbury packed for her first slumber party

Headed to NYC, took a nice leisurely stroll up the East River, watched a girls softball game, play at a dog park and an high-end antique shop where we could only afford the postcards.

Stumbled upon a lovely little green space called La Plaza Cultural where we got lots of ideas for our own landscaping.

We spent about an hour there, wandering in and out of all the little gardens and hidden nuggets. Pretty awesome.

Dinner at Brick Lane Curry House was a delight. Rustic and European curry dishes where Laura had the butter masala and I had to try the chicken biryani. Much spicier than your average suburb fare, but that's what we were looking for. Partnered with some aloo chaat and a 40oz of Taj Mahal each and it was a dining delight. Entertainment came when one dude at the table next to us, full of Australian youngens, ordered the Phaal, the house "challenge" dish, where they have to give a verbal agreement not to sue the joint is any harm comes to them from eating this insanely spicy dish. Just hearing the ingredients described gave me sweats. I had to yell out to the guy, who looked a little nervous that if he ate it, I'd buy it. Long story short, our dinner cost $20 more than what we ordered ourselves. Honestly, it was impressive.

Then to the venue, Bowery, never been. Felt old. Found seats in the balcony, away from the hippies. Opening acts were noisy but pleasant M. Geddes Gengras and noisy but abrasive Eric Copeland. Then Akron/Family took the stage and literally and quite unexpectedly blew our damn faces off. Not a single one of their hits, which is what these guys do, and every song was rather indulgent, but not in a bad way. Lots of loud, humming, tribal blasts by insanely talented musicians who have apparently found their sinister sound. Not the A/F we would've expected 4 years ago, but an awesome show nonetheless. Highlight had to be the encore where they finally played a familiar tune, of course, "Ed Is A Portal" which tore the crowd to pieces. We left around 1am, and were thoroughly tuckered.

Next morning was early, even tho we got home after 3am, we had to pick up Yuula at 7. An oddly frustrating search for a breakfast venue landed us at the Arlington Diner where I of course had birthday pancakes.

Went grocery shopping, took a couple hours. Then after going home and dumping the load, we headed out to Ross & Ross for the first time this season in search of some new trees, which has become a birthday tradition. Two hydrangeas, mainly because they were so well priced, plus Kathy likes us.

Home to break in our new grill, eat cake and open gifts. Check out this awesome addition to our ever-growing outdoor knick knack collection.

Nice. Happy Birthday to me.

And today we planted the trees.

song of the day

what a brilliant new album from Thee Oh Sees, pay attention Wayne Coyne, hes coming for ya

Evenings Become Erratic

We've had our fair share of late nights the past few weeks, for one reason or another. The concept of "bedtime" hasn't really materialized just yet. After dinner Yuula usually tried to empty whatever she has left in the tank, and takes us on a little journey.

It's Judee's favorite part of the day.

Root For NYC With An OKC Backup

Saw this new SI cover and remembered it's NBA finals time. I don't get too worked up over these games, maybe watch the finals, but i will follow them. I think the Knicks can actually make it out of the first round, poor Carmelo. But when they undoubtedly get booted from the competition I will be rooting for this guy, because nobody likes a dynasty.

Ok C'mon Okema

Tomorrow will be its one year anniversary, and it's decorating for a party

Careful Cares For You

song of the day

am I the only one who finds everything about this just wonderful?

The Only Way To Fly Is Die

Exit stage right. Richie Havens had what I always regarded as the finest performance of the penultimate music concert of maybe the last 300 years, that's all. Lost a good one today.

Watch it...

Last Song All Toy Crackout

We tell her she has one song left til it's time for nite-nite. Then she goes bananas.

New More Weird Science

Heard they're remaking this little blast from the past. I gotta say, I don't mind it. I welcome the attmept fo reworking the great John Hughes films. As long as Bill Paxton returns to reprise his Oscar-worthy performance as Chet.

Think they'll ever make their way around to the Breakfast Club and just remove all those curse words from the beginning to make life easier for TBS?

On This Dullest Of Days

Ain't got nothing today. We have a few busy weeks coming up, birthdays, concerts, families, both families. And hopefully amidst all that the weather will finally break, for good.

For now, on this dullest of days, here's a few pictures of Yuula from the weekend...

How Ever Fast I Dance

song of the day

liked the ep, love the album, hard to pick a favorite track, but this one jumped out at me... Woodkid

Worst Getaway Vehicle Ever

Well that was something. I, like most, have been kind of glued to this thing, especially the pursuit that started last night. I don't think I slept last. I don't know why this fascinates me. Us.

I don't really have much to say. Just wanted to note this in my little journaling. Not because of the carnage, or the evil, but all the wild stories that came out of this whole thing. It's really quite... fascinating.

All Six And Thirty

This evening Judee cleaned all our feet and toes. All six and thirty. I knew it was a good idea to get a dog.

Oh but then she peed on the rug.

And Yuula ate pepper, because she thought it was sprinkles.

Spring's Park And Purge

Another Unremarkable one for the books, but yesterday was more interesting. I spent the entire day cleaning out the tool shed, for the 4th year in a row. Let's see if this one sticks. With Laura's help I was able to get further alone into some sense of "organization" this year, so there is hope. The most satisfying part of the day came when waste management showed up on schedule and I threw out 15 bags of refuse, along with every old composite shelf I could find on the property. Purged.

After breakfast Laura took the child to meet the Trunks at the park. So I'm sure that was fun. I live through the photos, just like everyone else.

Slides are fun.

When They Come Home At Night They Say

song of the day

just cuz, it's so damn catchy

We Got A Float

that most definitely does not boat.

Strike that, reverse it.

We were planning on making Yuula a sandbox, soooooo...

plus, it was free

Shrunk And Disposed Of

I remembered today, for some reason, that I caught Yuula watching the Incredible Shrinking Woman after her cartoon movie went off on Friday. What an awesome movie that is. I remember this scene in particular giving me nightmares til I was 24.

We should all revisit our childhood favorites.

Next up, the Pirate Movie.

Despite These Degrees

Despite the fact that it was about 37 degrees this morning, we got up and out and got to work in the yard. I had started a project yesterday and was determined to finish. Said project was to turn this ...

into this...

I came very close. I ran out of shingles with just a few rows left. So it will have to wait just a couple of days. But that is one of the four major construction projects I have planned this spring/sumee, if the spring/summer would ever start.

We worked hard this weekend. The whole family pitched in. So how else do we reward ourselves...

Despite the temperature being only 45, we just had to hit Maryann's for the first time this season and brave the chilly air to eat cones on the patio.

Wouldn't have it any other way
