One Final Horse Hunt

DSC_0099

114 horses on the island. We had no trouble seeing any the first couple days. They pretyy much came to us. But once the Kelly's arrived they seemed to be incognito. We decided to go on one last horse hunt before heading back to the site for some campfiring. Looked here, there, most of the easy sites that included minimal hiking and no dice. One last spot would prove to be the lucky one.

Horse Are Far But Deer Are Close

DSC_0340

After a little grocery shopping and returning from Ocean City we thought we'd take a drive down the island to try and find some horseys. Unfortunately the only horses we could find were out in the middle of the marsh and this is as close as we could get...

A Welcome To Assateague

So we went to Assateague on Monday. It's the tiny island off Maryland with all the wild horses running around. We weren't sure we'd see any, but thought it'd be fun to campout even if we didn't. Amazingly, we pulled into the campground, found our site, and as if they were the welcoming committee, there they were...

With the sun going down and the temperature dropping we wasted no time putting up the tent, and Yuula was immediately excited about the entire debacle.

The fire took a few tries, but the wind died down enough to get one going with minimal tantrum.

A Pile Of It

1307201514929

We're on the verge of actually planting some plants in the vegetable garden, but first we need something to plant it in. Pocono dirt is notoriously rocky, so we turned to our master gardeners up the mountain for their premium compost, full of tasty horse turd and goat nugget, aged to perfection and ripe for the pickin'. Pick we did.

Owens' Farm Found

We knew we had some family living nearby, further up the mountain. Family from my mothers side. Her fathers sister and her daughter, Eileen & Susie. When we finally found the house we realized we had driven past it, a couple of times, without even knowing. Nice big white farmhouse, perfect for exploring. I found a horse & an old truck. I wonder if they knew about them.

The house is split down the middle (literally) and we got the tour of Eileen's side. If I was a 70 year old woman, this would be exactly what I would want my house to look like. Perfect. Laura agreed.

This creepy doll was the only thing I'd have to probably have to get rid of. I'd lie awake at night wondering when it was going to finally smother me in my sleep.

Susie & Eileen took us out to eat at their local dive bar/restaurant/hotel called, The Hotel. Laura had the Georgie Porgie & I had a plate of pesto linguini. Quite delicious. Here's the snapshots I was able to sneak of our hosts. I got the feeling they don't like having any photographic evidence.

Good news is, now we know where they live, about half an hour over the mountain. We plan on going over to shovel up some horse crap. We need it. Really.
