Sunflowers Are Cannibals

We've deprived ourselves of knowledge, waiting so long to go visit Aunt Eileen and Cousin Susie in Newfoundland. We got close last weekend, but this time we were determined. Finally gathered up our belongings and our baby and headed north.

Always met in the driveway, it was introductions first, as they've never met our little Yuula. Yuula being a rude Gus stayed asleep thru the ceremony. Then it was feeding time for the barnyard animals so Yuula met her first horse and goats. She didn't seem phased.

Back to the patio for discussion ranging a variety of topics, like lyme disease, weak bladders, our complex family geneaology, the politics of local dining and the unfair treatment of brilliant beavers. I'm serious. And then lunch was served. Olives black & manzanilla, pickles sweet & dill, chips sour cream & BBQ, and cheese swiss & pepper jack for hors d'oeuvres. Lunch was roast beef sandwiches with Susie's special sauce which I think was varying degrees of mayonnaise and horse radish. For dessert Eileen brought out some peach pie and ice cream. We ate it all.

I went for a little walk and the ladies hit the garden. I came back and found all three elbow deep in soil and Susie's mutant vegetables.

Black cherry tomatoes, lemon cucumbers, brussel sprout asparagus. They put together a care package for us to take home. I wandered the garden, managed to snap a shot of the ever elusive Susie and learned that they feed their sunflowers sunflower seed. They eat their young.

The comic relief moment came as Susie held Yuula for the first time. She was quite nervous and felt she had to sit down, in case of a slip the fall would be minimal. At first Yuula was fine. Eileen told us how her found our baby's name funny because how it rhymed with her mother's name, Lula. I had no idea. The Yuula began to cry and Susie couldn't take it. Laura and I let her take this one, but instead of soothing the girl Susie began to cry. Eileen found this hilarious, the sight of her full grown daughter losing it over a sobbing baby, so she began to laugh so hard she was crying. And not wanting to be left out Laura and I struck up some tears and we all had a good chuckle.

Even Sara came over to see what the fuss was about.

All in all, was a lovely afternoon with some good food and great company. We came home with a basket of Susie's garden creations, a jar of conrstarch, a bag of frozen raisin tea biscuits and a bag of 72 perogies. So, yeah, good day.

Glad that you had a fun and interesting day at the farm. I'm sure that both the ladies enjoyed meeting Yuula. I wish there had been a pic of all of you crying..too funny.
as far as family...Eileen has all the answers and stories and pics..and she is like her mom and I am like my mom..we cry easily ..I was cursed..got that gene from both sides of the family...so looks like that gene went to you and skipped to Laura.
