It's Called A Baby "Shower"

Saturday was Theresa's baby shower. I spent most of the day in the basement dressed inappropriately, but I did sneak upstairs for some taco salad and the discarded Mexican Wedding (Shower) cake that was tucked away in the oven. I heard it all went well, that is until Yuula decided to start taking her clothes off and hop into a bucket of water.

Kids Hate Baby Monkeys

At the baby shower in Trenton, overcast and lovely. Guys hanging outside while the girls are inside doing all things pastel. Baby Dane and little Bella decided to take the opportunity to destroy the decor. So far it's the highlight of the weekend. That monkey never stood a chance.

Dogfights, Brushfires, Beer & Booties

What do these four things have in common? Seemingly nothing, unless you attended our baby shower this past weekend.

I wrote briefly about it Sunday night, and posted most of the photos, but didn't give the full story. The full story, well, involved a dogfight, a brushfire, beer and booties. Amongst lots of other baby things. Blankets, pacifiers, onesies, the baby's room is beginning to look like Babies R Us. We gotta get on that soon.

But it was a day of many firsts. First time meeting many of Laura's coworkers. First time the yard was presentable. First big party at the house. First time I ate baby food. First time I saw Vic dance. Mostly it was exhausting. But fun. All the hard work was well worth it. Thanks to everyone who came, gifted or whose hands helped. Let's do it again sometime eh?

This sums it up....

I'll have you know, no one was injured in the dogfight, in the brushfire or all the drinking. Are you supposed to have alcohol at a baby shower?

But There Was A Shower

P1190959

I'm too tired to elaborate but there was a baby shower here today. We've been working our asses off to get ready for it. Hopefully everyone had a nice time, but I wouldn't know. I was pretty out of it most of the time. But I can show you some photos and maybe you can piece it together.

You should know that there was a fire. What's a baby shower without a good forest fire? Ain't nothing! That's what! Make note.

That's it. No more showers a la baby. We got it all. At least I hope. We got what we got and the baby will make due. I'm too tired to really know what is.............

Good Shower Though

P1190304
Baby showers are a weird thing. I don't know that I should've been involved in one. I wasn't very good with the games. The names I came up with were inappropriate (Bartlebee & Tevia). But it was nice to see some old girls, some we hadn't seen in years. Everyone looks good and seems happy. We learned of them becoming lawyers and historians and tiramisu chefs and cat-opera directors... and we couldn't be happier for them. Good shower though.

Dave made his famous watermelon cart. We made sure to be careful with it because this is what we will be using the first few months to push her around in.

Asriel made us a diaper cake. Delicious and half the fat.

And there was food.

What Potent Blood

...hath modest May. Almost to an end. These months are flying like none other. Baby is coming. Screws are tightening. Showers are upon us. June and July showers. And showers this weekend that are keeping me from mowing the lawn.

P1190072

For now I'm compiling a master list, I call it "the A-list", of music, scanning thru the iTunes, now at 57,063 strong, to find only the elite and turn it into a flawless playlist for the roadtrip. The Ohio "Roadtripq" mix had defects, mainly because I lazily dropped full albums that had no business accepting the benefit of my doubt. This time it's a track by track scavenger hunt, choosing choice tunes and reaching back as far as the early 50's for hits. It's gonna be a doozy. I may just drive the speed limit.

P1190069

As for now, I just sent the little pregnant woman off to work, carrying precious cargo and looking forward to tomorrow. I made her a double lunch, two sandwiches, two oranges, two everything. I got piles of laundry and bigger piles of Law & Order on, but I do hope to get outside to a dry lawn as well. I got it down to 40 minutes now. Going for a record.

Oh, and that's a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote up there. Dunno where I heard it.

Coney Island Baby Shower

Today we got two for the price of one. A recap of our visit to Coney Island and a few highlights from April's baby shower. I wanna make sure I maximize the amount of content so you don't feel that your time has been wasted. On with it then...

As you may have heard (^) Fran & I took a short daytrip to Coney Island yesterday as a sort of one last hurrah before next week comes and changes our lives forever. It shouldn't be a surprise to hear that the island, which is actually a peninsula, has not maintained the sense of purity and wonderment that turned it into the famous landmark it's known as today. I don't think Lou Reed would write songs about the modern day Coney Island, but maybe he would. I'm getting off topic.

We showed up around 2 on a bit of a high after finally ending our relentless search for a duvet at Ikea and took right to the boards. The place was packed for this early in the season, but it was a Saturday and most everyone was on their best behavior. We snaked our way thru the different amusement parks; Astroland, Wonder Wheel, mainly just taking in the sites and enjoying the seabreeze. There seemed to be an inordinate amount of "haunted house" type rides, with names like Dante's Inferno & my personal favorite, The Ghost Hole (which featured a man who simultaneously loses control of every bodily function available), so it encouraged us to head back to the boardwalk rather quickly.

We strayed toward the depressingly inactive Parachute Jump tower and watched a few fleeting moments of a Brooklyn Cyclones game from the best seat in the house.

A new feature for Coney Island this year is the BeachDozer. For a small fee you and a friend can ride a bulldozer up and down the beach, causing havoc and redesigned the shoreline as you see fit.

We made our way out onto Steeplechase Pier where our life was threatened by rogue fish hooks and mighty winds that almost claimed my Expos cap.

And who goes to Coney Island without eating at Nathan's Famous?? No one! That's who.

Then we visited one of the last remaining reminders of Coney Island's glory days, the Cyclone, but due to full bellies & money/time restrictions we settled on living vicariously through the people who were already on it.

We got back on the road and headed for NJ, but not before we were involved in what seemed to be some sort of action filming, complete with race car stunts, multiple close range helicopters and traffic in the Lincoln Tunnel. We arrived a little late for April's baby shower, but no one seemed to notice. We sat at a table with birds of our feather, the non-relateds, and managed to have a little party of our own. When you put Johnny & Greg together in any room it's always a scene.

P1080478

We participated in many of the games such as baby lottery, baby bingo (which Greg won twice!), and the all-time classic "Who's Got the Dirty Diaper?". Fran even got in with the macho men and competed in baby bottle beer bong where she placed 11th out of eleven. I am very proud.

It was a fun night, and April looks happy as I've ever seen her. We had tons of delicious food and we got to spend quality time with quality people. Too bad more of them aren't getting pregnant, altho I understand that is now all the rage.
