Dying's For Fools

Charlie-Sheen-on-The-Today-Show

I know I'm behind the ball on this one but I just listened to some Charlie Sheen interviews this morning and I gotta tell ya, sometimes he makes a lot of sense. At the very least I think he's being candid which makes for entertaining commentary which, let's remember, is what these people are all about. A year ago no one breathed a word about Charlie Sheen. Now there's t-shirts immortalizing his rants. Mission accomplished. Are we talking about a modern day Marlon Brando? No. But he does make tremendous soundbites.

"I have a disease? Bullshit. I cured it with my brain.”

"Winning, anyone? Rhymes with winning. Anyone? Yeah, that would be us. Sorry, man, didn’t make the rules. Oops!”

"I’m tired of pretending I’m not a total bitchin’ rock star from Mars."

"You can’t process me with a normal brain."

“If you borrowed my brain for five seconds, you’d be like, ‘Dude! Can’t handle it, unplug this bastard!’ It fires in a way that’s maybe not from this particular terrestrial realm.”

"I was banging seven-gram rocks, because that’s how I roll. I have one speed, I have one gear: Go."

"Can't is the cancer of happening."

"Wow. What does that mean? I’m bi-WINNING.”

"I am battle-tested bayonets, bro.”

"I’m so tired of pretending my life isn’t perfect and bitching and just winning every second and I’m not perfect and bitchin’.”

"Look what I’m dealing with, man, I’m dealing with fools and trolls.”

"It’s just strafing runs in my underwear before my first cup of coffee, because I don’t have time for these clowns.”

"You have the right to kill me, but you do not have the right to judge me. Boom. That’s the whole movie. That’s life.”

"I’m sorry man, I got magic and I’ve got poetry in my fingertips, you know, most of the time, and this includes naps."

"I’m an F-18, bro.”

"I’m not Thomas Jefferson. He was a pussy.”

"I am on a drug, it's called Charlie Sheen. It's not available because if you try it you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body."

"I'm bi-winning."

"There’s a new sheriff in town. And he has an army of assassins.”

"The run I was on made Sinatra, Flynn, Jagger, Richards, all of them look like droopy-eyed armless children."

"The only thing I’m addicted to right now is winning.”

"I wish him nothing but pain in his silly travels especially if they wind up in my octagon. Clearly I have defeated this earthworm with my words -- imagine what I would have done with my fire breathing fists."

"They picked a fight with a warlock."

"If you’re a part of my family, I will love you violently."

"Winning."

"I will not believe that if I do something then I have to follow a certain path because it was written for normal people. People who aren’t special. People who don’t have tiger blood and Adonis DNA."

"C’mon bro, I won best picture at 20. I wasn’t even trying. I wasn’t even warm."

"Winning."

"Bring me Dr. Clown shoes."

I can't decide on a favorite. Don't kid yourself tho. If Oprah had said some of these they'd become societal mantras. But it does sound like he wants us to leave him be. I say we do it. The only person I feel bad for is Jon Cryer. Oh Duckie, someday you'll have your moment in the sun.

We Are The Lambing Season

We've been published!!

Much to our surprise Laura's Mom submitted one of our wedding photos to Country magazine and a year later, they published it. On the bottom right hand corner, see it? No, I don't know who that horse girl is either. Celebrating the coming of spring, its budding rhubarb, and the subsequent act of taking a knife to that very rhubarb. I am a fan of the stuff. We were also informed that as an ancillary award we will receive a dinner bell with our names emblazoned on the side. I have a feeling that "dinner" bell will soon be renamed the "breakfast/lunch/dinner/dessert/snack/wake up/come here/rub my feet/get away from me/do the laundry" bell. Just a prediction.

I highly recommend that you click on the photo for the full size so you can read the article and our caption especially.

So everyone run out to your local magazine retailer and pick up the February/March edition of Country magazine. And if you can't find it don't bother trying to call the number found on the website because they will just transfer you to someone else who speaks broken English and has absolutely no idea how magazine sales work. Five times.

Very Mary Kate

This actually looks funny...

London Digested, pt. II

Here's some photos from the second day of my attempt to stay away from the tourist hot spots. It rained for about two hours right as I got off the train at Fenchurch Street and my one goal for the day was to find a pub Jon had told me about called Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, a place referenced in numerous Dickens novels and also rumoured to be the place Samuel Johnson worked on what would become the first dictionary of the English language. Pretty cool huh? Yeah, I couldn't find it.

I stood and watched this for some time

For my final night in England, Jon & Michelle took me out for some good food and drinks. We started off at The Hoop, a pub in Stock.

Perfect!

We couldn't decide what we wanted so just ordered three dishes and wherever the waitress placed them, that's what we ate. It worked out well because after two pints...

and a bowl of winter root soup...

IMG_0109

...I was ready to dig in & I got the heartiest of the three meals.

Meal #1: Homecooked Smoked Ham, 2 Eggs & Chunky Chips

Meal #2: Hunters Chicken with Chunky Bread

Meal #3: The Hoop’s Toad in the Hole with Mash & Onion Gravy

Can you guess which I got?

You know it! Toad in the Hole! And I killed it.

On our way to the next pub Jon took us thru some backroads which highlighted driving the car thru a fjord, some breathtaking houses, and deciding to pull over on the darkest road I've ever been on to explore an old church.

Just before we got back home we stopped at one last place to cap off the night with a pint or two of Guinness and some good ol' conversation. We closed the place out.

The next morning it was time to go, but not without a final bowl of my beloved Mini Banana Wheat Bisks, the best cereal ever.

My flight home was rough. A lot of turbulence, but I had great company. A couple of ladies, BB & Jenny, traveling to NYC to do some Xmas shopping. They were a riot. BB all but maimed the row behind trying to change into her "flying socks" in the aisle, and only upon landing did I learn that, in some way, somehow, BB was the original Bridget Jones. She had to change her name to avoid the publicity. Strange. Here we are.

England is pretty cool.

Hanging With Greg In His Hood

Like a whirlwind, we were in and out of the city, managing to spend some quality time with our buddy Greg and attend Jeff Sacktig's surprise 4oth birthday party (the surprise I alluded to in a previous post: SURPRISE!!). So after a nightmarish passing thru the Hollland Tunnel we arrived at Greg's around 9:30 Friday night. We had never been to his place so he gave us the grand tour of his quaint one bedroom apartment in the Village. Minetta Lane, just a block or so from Washington Square Park. He took us out to dinner at the subtly delicious Ditch Plains on Bedford, where Fran had a cheeseburger & I had the salmon, and we shared a bottle of fine merlot. Afterwards we headed out to one of Greg's favorite piano bars, at which he is a regular, called Rita Mae's, where we continued having some wine and listened to some passioned performances by locals and the underexposed wait staff. A incredibly nice night in the underbelly of the city that we won't soon forget. Oddly enough we have not a single photo of the evening, very uncharacteristic of us, but it's almost fitting that the adventure will only live in our minds.

The next day we woke bright & early, around 10:30, grabbed some pizza at John's, arrived just before the lunch rush.

We walked thru Washington Square park, which is being renovated, which made Greg borderline giddy, and met the fattest squirrel in NYC.

We headed uptown some to Union Park where they've been having a Christmas fair for the past few weeks. Greg bought a new hat

& I met a new favorite artist, Jonathan Safir. His photography is just what I've been looking for.

After some deliciously warming and Christmas-themed drinks at Starbucks we headed cross town to the new Apple store in the meat packing district so Greg could pick up a gift for Jeff's party & we could drool over the new iPhones. On our way out I ran into the frontman of one of my favoritest bands, Battles, Tyondai Braxton. He was more than kind, receptive and even posed for a quick photo.

We hurried back towards Greg's place, but took the long route so we could check out some amazing houses on Bedford that I would totally buy if I had the extra 20 mil laying around.

We did some window shopping on Bleeker

and then stopped at Rocco's Pastry Shoppe because Greg was having a sugar fit, but we didn't mind having some hot chocolate & cannolis.

A nice but quick visit. Let's hope there'll be more, soon.
